8. NATHANIEL CUMMINGS (1761–1818), son of Elisha Cummings and Mary Andrews

Nathaniel Cummings was born on 16 January 1761 in Topsfield, Massachusetts. [1][2] He died on 30 October 1818 in New Hampton, New Hampshire. [1][2][3] He married Mary Crawford in May of 1788, 1789 or 1790. [1][2].

Mary, the daughter of Jonathan and Mary (Heath) Crawford was born on 11 November 1770. [4] She married second unknown Cox of Holderness. [4]

Nathaniel's daughter Mary said that when she was about 13 she saw her father "hooked to death, being tossed on the horns of a mad animal." [1]

Nathaniel's death notice in the New Hampshire Patriot says: [3]

In New Hampton on Friday the 30th October Mr. Nathaniel Cummings, aged 59, by a wound he received from his own Bull, which tore him in such a shocking manner that he survived about twenty-five hours and expired: he has left a disconsolate widow and ten children to mourn the loss of a kind husband and one of the best parents, a good neighbor, a good citizen, and a good christian.

i. Reverand Cyrus Cummings was born on 23 April 1791 in Bridgewater, New Hampshire. He died on 9 September 1859 in Portland, Maine. He married Elizabeth Curtis.

ii. Jonathan Cummings was born on 12 November 1793 in Bridgewater. [1][5] He died on 19 April 1853 in Holderness. [6][7] He married Nancy Brown on 25 March 1817 in Bridgewater. [8] She married second Thomas Webber of Center Harbor, New Hampshire in February 1862. [7]

Jonathan was a carpenter. [7]

iii. Elisha Cummings was born on 10 January 1796 in Bridgewater. [1][5] He married the widow Ann B. Noyes of Boston. [7]

iv. Pingry Cummings was born on 28 February 1798 in Bridgewater. [1][9] He died on 7 November 1864. [7] Pingry Cummings of New Hampton married first Martha Batchelder on 6 February 1820. [10] Martha was the daughter of Simon and Polly (Marston) Batchelder of New Hampton and Bridgewater. [11] She was born on 6 April 1799 and died on 8 April 1842. [7] He married second Priscilla Stearns of Plymouth, New Hampshire on 10 September 1844. She died on 8 April 1849. [7] Pingry Cummings of New Hampton married third Alvira H. Young of Stewartstown on 4 July 1851 in Plymouth, Grafton County. [12][13] She died on 28 February 1853. [7] He married forth Mary T. Ladd of Meredith New Hampshire. [7]

v. William Smith Cummings was born on 1 March 1800. [1] He died in January 1874. [7] He married Martha Tibbetts of Berwick, Maine in January 1823. [7]

vi. Samuel Cummings was born on 1 May 1803. [1] He died on 14 August 1836. [2] He marrried Martha Weeks. [1]

Samuel was a farmer. [2]

vii. Mary Cummings was born on 1 March 1805. [1] She married Andrew S. Cox of Holderness on 23 December 1828. [1]

viii. Julia Cummings was born on 11 June 1808. [1] She married Joel Wilson of Cumberland, Maine. [1] They are said to have died in Westbrook within an hour and a quarter of one another. [1]

ix. Relief Cummings was born on 3 April 1810. [1] She died on 3 January 1876 in Boston. [1] She married first Joseph Connell on 10 August 1828. [1] He died in July 1833 in Holderness. [1] She married second C. Hellesen of Denmark. [1] He died in 1843. [1] She married third Thomas H. Smith of New Hampton. [1]

x. Mahala Cummings was born on 3 March 1812. [1] She died on 23 December 1842 in Plymouth or Holderness, New Hampshire. [1] She may have married Nathaniel Gilman of Gilford, New Hampshire on 7 May 1832. [1]

xi. Unknown daughter Cummings died young. [1]
